Over the past four years, the BIOMAT Project has been at the forefront of innovation, developing and testing cutting-edge solutions to produce a new generation of bio-based polyurethane (bio-PUR) functional foams. By leveraging biobased materials such as rice husk and lignin and harnessing nanotechnologies, our partners have achieved groundbreaking advancements. These efforts have led to the creation of high-performance materials boasting superior thermal and mechanical properties, noise insulation, flame retardancy, and waterproofing capabilities.

At the heart of these achievements are BIOMAT’s 12 Pilot Lines. These state-of-the-art facilities are designed to optimise processes and upscale production, driving forward the adoption of sustainable, bio-based technologies. The Pilot Lines encompass a wide range of technical services, including:

• Production and functionalisation of bio-based silica nanoparticles
• ​Functionalisation of lignocellulosic materials
• Nanoformulation of adhesion promoters
• Production of Modified Cellulose NanoCrystals (MCNC)
• Functionalisation of Crystalline Nano-Cellulose (CNC) and silica nanoparticles with biobased polyol for polyurethane foam composites
• Production of polyurethane foam panels
• Production of thermoset resin prepregs
• Development of bio-based, nano-reinforced soft PUR-foam formulations
• Microwave-assisted chemical and chemo-enzymatic recycling of bio-PUR-based composites
• Formulation of bio-based polyols
• Development of bio-PUR aerogel materials
• Preparation of (nano) filled polyol/resin formulations

These services represent a cornerstone of the BIOMAT Project’s mission to accelerate the transition towards a bioeconomy, enabling the creation of eco-friendly materials for several industrial applications.
